Find answers to common questions about kept.
Tap the green "+" button at the bottom of the screen. Enter the amount, choose a category, select Income or Expense, add an optional note, and tap Save. Your transaction will appear immediately on the Dashboard.
No. kept works entirely without an account. All your data is stored locally on your device. Just install and start tracking — no email, no password, no sign-up required.
kept comes with default categories like Groceries, Transport, Entertainment, and more. You can create, edit, and archive custom categories in Settings > Categories. Each category has a custom icon and color.
Go to the Budgets tab and tap "+". Give your budget a name, set a spending limit, choose a period (weekly, monthly, or yearly), and optionally assign it to a specific category. You'll see your progress update in real time as you log expenses.
Yes. Budget alert notifications are enabled by default. When you approach or exceed a budget limit, kept sends you a notification. You can manage budget alerts in Settings > Notifications.
Go to Settings > Authentication and toggle on App Lock. If your device supports Face ID or Touch ID, it will be enabled automatically. You'll also be asked to set a 4-digit PIN as a backup method. The next time you open kept, you'll be prompted to authenticate.
Your data is stored using Apple's SwiftData framework on your device, which benefits from iOS device-level encryption. If you enable iCloud Sync, data is encrypted by Apple in transit and at rest within your personal iCloud account. The developer has no access to your data at any point.
Go to Settings > Data and toggle on iCloud Sync. You'll need to restart the app for changes to take effect. Your data syncs to your personal iCloud account — the developer cannot access it.
The database configuration changes between local-only storage and cloud-backed storage, which requires the app to reinitialize its data container. This is a one-time step when you toggle the setting.
Go to Settings > Data > Export Data. Your transactions will be exported as a CSV file that you can open in Excel, Numbers, or Google Sheets. The file includes dates, titles, amounts, types, categories, and notes for every transaction.
kept supports CSV files (with Date, Title, Amount, and Type columns) and JSON files (as an array of transaction objects). Go to Settings > Data > Import Data to get started.
Yes. kept matches imported category and account names to your existing ones. If no match is found, transactions are imported without a category assignment, and you can assign categories manually afterward.
